- - - - We are proud to announce the impending arrival of Stepmother, the first of two titles from one of the true revolutionaries in modern American fiction. (A Child Again, a collection of short fiction, will be published next spring.) Over the past 40 years, Coover has blazed a trail for an entire generation of writers and admirers, and he shows no signs of slowing down. Stepmother will reach stores around June 15, and between now and then, we will be sharing Coover-related material with you, here. First, a word from Rick Moody: Robert Coover was my teacher when I was young and impressionable, which was long ago. He put my head in a vise, and crushed it, picked out the bits that were worth saving, of which there were not many, and made me the writer that I am. I can still remember acutely the challenging remarks on my assignments back in his class on "Ancient Fictions," of which three or four were legitimately encouraging. He never lied. He rarely effused. At the time, I was already a huge fan of Pricksongs and Descants and Spanking the Maid, as I still am. The same goes for Gerald's Party, that masterpiece The Public Burning, The Origin of the Brunists, and A Night at the Movies. Rarely has mordant wit and loathing for the corridors of power been yoked so effectively to a wild love of language and a democratic urge to entertain. He was my teacher then, and he is still my teacher by his fine example. I always read his new work with a sense of excitement. - - - - OTHER McSWEENEY'S FEATURES: - - - - Pros And Cons Of John Kerry's Top Twenty Vice-Presidential Candidates By John Moe
