4/23 We've been blessed beyond belief at the response of would-be volunteers to tutor at 826 Valencia. So far, when the space has been functional for about two days, we have about 230 applications, and almost all of those good people are astoundingly qualified. We've been meeting and interviewing the applicants as quickly as we can, and are now trying to think of ways we can help harness this unexpectedly huge outpouring. We'll provide updates here and on the 826 site. The store portion of 826 Valencia has now been open a week, and business — or whatever you want to call it — has been very good. Last Saturday we even had periodic visits from guests at a local pirate-themed wedding, who were required to visit the store to get one of many clues about where the ceremony would be held that day. This is true. Their costumes were impeccable. All the proceeds from the store go to help Youth Speaks, and to help us run the writing lab at 826 Valencia, and to that end, after realizing we really didn't have all that much truly-purchaseable stuff (no one was buying the lard, for example), we've opened an old cache of Might magazines, which will be available in a quiet drawer in the back of the store. We have copies of every issue — though some issues in small quantities — and they're all in mint condition, and we're selling them cheap: $10 each. We also have very good mops. They are much better than the mops at the cleaning supply place across the street. - - - - |
