THE 826 TEACHER OF THE MONTH AWARD
We're happy to announce that starting in mid-October and once a month thereafter, 826 Valencia will award a Bay Area teacher the 826 Teacher of the Month Award, which comes with a $1500 gift for use in any way the honoree chooses.
826 VALENCIA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
826 Valencia is thrilled to announce our newest scholarships:
The Young Author's Scholarship, which will award $10,000 to a Bay Area student who shows a love of writing outside of school assignments. We will be keeping our eyes open for students who independently create 'zines or newspapers, or produce short collections of prose or poetry. Additionally, two Bay Area couples, Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman, and Daniel Handler and Lisa Brown, have made possible another 826 Valencia Scholarship. We now offer a total of three different $10,000 scholarships to Bay Area students who need assistance paying for their freshman year in college. Applications are due by April 15, 2003.
COMPUTER REDISTRIBUTION PROGRAM
Beginning in October, 826 Valencia will be organizing a computer donation program allowing Bay Area children currently without computers to receive them from generous neighbors. The guidelines for donation are as follows:
No older than two to three years
Includes original software and connection cables
Basic hardware only, no printers or accessories needed
CONGRATULATIONS TO CHINAKA HODGE!
826 Valencia awarded our first college scholarship to Chinaka Hodge, 18, who hails from Oakland and is matriculating at NYU. Chinaka is an electifying spoken word performer and was an integral part of Youth Speaks, our sponsoring organization. She will be sending us monthly updates on her first year of college. Take a look at the first installment of her diary.
