David Byrne Lead Us Not Into Temptation, Music From the Film Young Adam Thrill Jockey, pounds 14.99 The prolific ex-Talking Head saw an opportunity too good to miss when film director David MacKenzie asked him to compose a soundtrack to the Scottish-produced indie film Young Adam, an adaptation of Scots beat writer Alexander Trocchi's novel. Although Byrne is Scottish by birth, he left Dumbarton aged four and, by his own admission, is effectively now American. This outsider/insider view lends itself beautifully to the alienated 1950s world of the film's lead character (played by Ewan McGregor), who lives on a filthy Glasgow-docked barge and engages in acts of filthier sex merely to pass the time. The 11 mainly instrumental tracks have an unshakeable air of melancholy and have queasily evocative titles such as Warm Sheets and Dirty Hair, with sounds - provided by members of Mogwai and Belle and Sebastian, among others - to match. Having said that, this is still probably less of an ordeal to listen to than the film is to watch. If you can forget about the movie, it's all the better to enjoy these unsettling pieces in their own right. [PS]Arts [ES] LOAD-DATE: October 4, 2003 - - - -
