This Caracas sextet's third recording for David Byrne's hip Luaka Bop label is a veritable glitter-ball of ironic dance music reflections, from the opening exotic- lounge theme to the subsequentfour-to-the-floor house anthems, pumping retro-funk, ersatz salsa and slinky ballroom ballads. The production by dance maestros Masters at Work is heavier on the bass than the group's previous offerings, but there's been no crass capitulation to acommercial formula. Customary quirks of sensuality and humour remain relatively undisturbed, with the whole thing sounding both very sexy, and very enjoyable. The closest historical reference point may be a vintage-era Kid Creole and the Coconuts, ifthat doesn't sound too hopelessly naff. And, yes, the lyrics are mainly in Spanish, natch. Unlike Los Amigos' previous albums, however, there are no references to either doggie-style sex or the pleasures of masturbation, at least as far as I can tell. Those omissions aside, though, it's great.
