LENGTH: 290 words

HEADLINE: A happy, talented collective

BYLINE: AMY CAMERON

BODY:

In mid-1996, a group of University of Manitoba fine arts students started meeting every Wednesday in their shared studio. Together they worked on drawings as well as paintings, videos, collages, fanzines, masks, costumes, dioramas, kites and even puppets. The Royal Art Lodge was born. Today, the group -- made up of Michael Dumontier, Hollie Dzama, Marcel Dzama, Neil Farber, Drue Langlois and Myles Langlois -- is still going strong. They're all full-time artists and range in age from 18 to mid-30s. Some, like Marcel Dzama, are established; others, like his 18-year-old sister, Hollie, are just beginning to come into their own.

Recently an exhibit of their works, titled Ask the Dust, was displayed at the Drawing Centre in New York City -- and broke all attendance records at the 25-year-old gallery. Yet, despite a growing international reputation, these artists remain based in Winnipeg. "I think this notion of working collectively rings a bell with people -- that there is still a glimmer of hope for such an activity that has a note of authenticity and shared responsibility," explains Wayne Baerwaldt, co-curator of Ask the Dust and director of Toronto's Power Plant gallery, where the show will be displayed from March 21 to May 25. "And you look at these works and you are repeatedly enchanted or humoured or devastated with this sort of wavering between the philosophical depth and the pop surface."

After Toronto, the show of over 700 Royal Art Lodge pieces is scheduled to hang in Holland's De Vleeshal gallery. And seven North American and European galleries are currently vying for the honour of showing Ask the Dust. Certainly, they're hoping to break some attendance records of their own.
