Dispatches From the Anacostia
BY Holly Jones

The “forgotten” Anacostia River, one of the filthiest rivers in the United States, flows through the nation’s capital, separating the D.C. popularized by tourists and the media from the higher-crime low-income neighborhood of Anacostia, on the river’s southeastern side. Each year, a handful of inner-city youth work to clean the river as part of the Earth Conservation Corps program. These dispatches will follow one such group of young people through their year as they work alongside the Anacostia River and cope with the realities they return to at the end of each workday.
