T H E   W R I T I N G   P R O J E C T A T   8 2 6   V A L E N C I A - - - - McSweeney's recently opened the 826 Valencia Writing Project, a non-profit tutoring center in the Mission neighborhood of San Francisco. 826 Valencia is designed to help students, ages 8–18, develop writing skills of all kinds, including creative writing, journalism, and composition. We offer free drop-in tutoring, after school workshops in everything from video production to SAT preparation, field trips, as well as assistance with various student publications. Our experienced, enthusiastic tutors, totaling over 200, give students one-on-one attention to supplement their classroom curriculum. We believe that great leaps in writing skills and comprehension can be made within hours if students are given concentrated help from knowledgeable tutor/mentors. We also support area teachers in any way we can, especially through field trips or after school workshops. In addition, 826 Valencia helps to introduce classes to the various software programs used for design, illustration, and desktop publishing. At the front of the 826 Valencia space is our pirate supply store, featuring glass eyes, peg legs, lard, a fish viewing nook, and a few McSweeney's journals and books.
