Issue 13 is now flying into the trembling hands of beloved subscribers and almost-equally-beloved bookstore-goers. We always had pretty high hopes for this issue, and as it came together, our hopes grew higher and higher. Nevertheless, when we saw the actual thing, the finished product, our high hopes were blown to smithereens, replaced by an overall sense of agog. Joy and excitement and agog.

Issue 13 is dedicated to comics—a little about their past and mostly about their present. The contributors include Dan Clowes, Lynda Barry, R. Crumb, art spiegelman, Charles Burns, Gary Panter, Julie Doucet ... at some point we just have to stop, because there are about thirty, and each one is dynamite. In addition, there are written contributions from Ira Glass, Chip Kidd, John Updike, Glen David Gold, and others. It's all pretty great.

The name we haven't yet mentioned is Chris Ware, the man who made this happen, the guest editor of Issue 13. Unfailingly friendly, insanely thorough, and deeply brilliant—we salute him, embrace him, and thank him for making us look good. For anyone who finds the change disconcerting, we promise to return to our traditional slovenly, ill-mannered behavior in Issue 14.

One important erratum: In Richard Sala's strange, haunting contribution, two pages were inadvertently switched, through no fault of Mr. Sala. In fact, he anticipated our capacity for folly and cleverly numbered his pages. This did not stop us from flubbing the order, but it does make it easy for you to read it correctly: pages 123 (Sala's p. 4) and 124 should be read in reverse order. We regret the error and apologize to Mr. Sala.

Another note: For those in the San Francisco area, there will be a show of original artwork from the issue at the Jack Hanley Gallery, at 398 Valencia, just up the street from us. The show opens on June 10 and will be up for about a month; the main event will be Saturday, June 19, at 6:00, when Chris Ware and other contributors may be in attendance, schedules permitting. All are welcome.
