- - - - JACKSONVILLE, Fla., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- With schools closed for the summer break, CSX Transportation, Inc. and Operation Lifesaver have an important, potentially lifesaving message for the residents of Kentucky: Stay off railroad tracks! In 1999 nationwide, nearly 500 people were killed and more than 400 were injured while on railroad property without permission of the railroad, according to Federal Railroad Administration statistics. In Kentucky last year, one person was killed and nine were injured while trespassing on railroad property. Parents, students and others in the community should consider these facts when encountering a railroad track: * Railroad property is a place of business where trains and other equipment can move at any time. Walking or riding on any railroad right of way or other railroad property without the permission of the railroad is unsafe, trespassing and illegal. Violators will be prosecuted. * Trespassing on railroad bridges and in tunnels further increases the chances of serious injury or death. Bridges and tunnels only have room for trains. * Exercise caution when crossing tracks at highway-rail intersections. Look for a second train moving from a different direction. * Trains cannot stop quickly! A 150-car freight train going only 30 mph requires two-thirds of a mile to come to a complete stop. At 50 mph, it requires more than a mile and a half to stop. * Trains cannot swerve! Forcing a train to make an emergency stop could cause it to derail, possibly causing injury to others as well as the trespasser. * Trains can appear at any time. Always expect a train! Operation Lifesaver presentations are available for people of all ages. For information about scheduling an Operation Lifesaver safety presentation, contact Bill White, CSXT public safety officer and Kentucky Operation Lifesaver state coordinator, at (502) 254-2158. Operation Lifesaver is a national, non-profit public education program dedicated to ending collisions, deaths and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and along railroad rights-of-way. CSXT and its 35,000 employees provide rail transportation and distribution services over a 23,000 route-mile network in 23 states, the District of Columbia and two Canadian provinces.
