- - - - CHICAGO, Nov. 28 -- Thomas Kirkpatrick, President of the Chicago Crime Commission, released today a list of corporate sponsors of the web pages of Chicago's most violent and notorious street gangs, and called on them to exercise greater responsibility in choosing where to spend their advertising dollars and with whom to associate their company name. "We recognize the right of everyone to free speech and expression," said Kirkpatrick, "but why are Gateway Computers and other tech companies and ad brokers lending their name and financial support to the major source of crime, drugs and violence in our communities? And why is AOL -- a supposedly 'family friendly' company -- hosting such sites? "If street gangs want to promote themselves and proselytize on the Internet, that is their right, but they should support that enterprise themselves without the help of legitimate businesses." "What's next?" asked Kirkpatrick, "Corporate insignia on crack cocaine packets? Bullets? Tombstones?" The Crime Commission has identified over twenty Chicago street gang sites, but has chosen not publicize them. Each gang site links to many others, so the Commission estimates there are hundreds around the country easily accessible. "One more reason," said Kirkpatrick, "for parents to monitor the Internet use of their children." Companies sponsoring the sites were identified by the Crime Commission as: Gateway Computers Companies identified as hosting the gang sites are: AOL Among the Chicago Street Gangs with web sites are: Latin Kings (multiple sites) SOURCE Chicago Crime Commission
