The Fall 2001 Durex(R) Global Sex Survey Reveals That Americans are Having More Sex But Also Taking Risks - - - - ATLANTA, Nov. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Americans are having sex more often, an average of 124 times per year, than people living anywhere else in the world according to this year's Global Sex Survey by Durex(R). And, the survey found that Americans have more partners, an average of 14.3, beating out the other world-leaders, the French (13.2) and the Australians (11). In fact, 4% of Americans surveyed claim to have had more than 100 partners, perhaps because they are losing their virginity at an average age of 16. While 6 in 10 Americans (60%) are concerned about contracting HIV/AIDS or another sexually transmitted disease, the survey also indicated almost 3 in 10 (29%) do not take measures to protect themselves during sex. In fact, 3 in 10 respondents also admit they have had unprotected sex with a new partner within the last 12 months, with men more likely to have had sex without a condom (36%) compared to women (24%). "The Fall 2001 Durex(R) Global Sex Survey has revealed that Americans are risking their health by having unprotected sex," stated Ted Conley, Vice President of marketing for Durex Consumer Products. "Based on the data from our survey, which shows that Americans are now having sex at a younger age than previous generations, there is an even greater need for increased education and promotion of good sexual health and habits." Losing Their Virginity At A Early Age More than 4 in 10 (45%) Americans admit they were younger than 16 when they lost their virginity, while 10% were 20 or over, according to the survey. Men claim to have started having sex more than a year earlier than women 15.5 compared with 16.6. Geographically, the survey indicated that people in Western states started slightly earlier than those in other regions at 15.7. Where Do Americans Like To Have Sex? The Durex(R) Global Sex Survey also revealed data on where Americans would most like to have sex and their opinions on the sexiest city in the world. Almost 3 in 10 Americans (28%) would most like to have sex on a beach, while 26% would prefer to be in a Jacuzzi, spa or hot tub. And, what is the world's sexiest city? Paris was the clear favorite for Americans (38%) next to Venice (17%) and New York City (12%). Condoms: The Most Popular Form of Contraception Durex(R) is committed to sexual education and encourages open communication about sexual health and the importance of protected sex. According to the survey, condoms are the most popular method of contraception in America, used by 46% of sexually active adults, but 15% admit they use no protection at all. Of the respondents who do use condoms, just 15% always use a condom for casual sex, and only 15% would ask their partner about their sexual history. "The results of the survey indicate that there is an increased need for more open communication and education about sex and the important role condoms play in protecting against sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS and pregnancy prevention," said Sari Locker, world-renowned relationship educator and author. "More importantly, condoms don't have to be seen as a hindrance to sex, but rather a way to make sex fun while also promoting safety." The global survey commissioned by Durex(R), the world's leading condom brand, asked adults aged 16 to 55 about sexual education, lifestyles and preferences and was carried out in a record 28 countries around the world. A total of more than 1,000 sexually and non-sexually active adults in America were surveyed, split equally between men and women. Responses to the survey were analyzed by sex, age and marital status providing a detailed picture of behavioral differences.
