M O S T C E N S O R E D - - - - - - - - PLANO, Texas, September 13, 1999 -- It's inside you. That insistent rhythm. You were born with it. It's who you are. It's a desire that consumes you -- a passion that possesses you. You may not know why. You simply do it. It's part of you. It's strengthening. It's enduring. It's renewing. It's a labor of love. "Labors of love" is JCPenney's theme this year to describe those individuals who give of themselves to make a difference in their communities -- volunteers. J. C. Penney Company, Inc. recognized and honored seven individuals and organizations that exemplify "labors of love" in a special ceremony today at its home office. The company recognized the winners of the two volunteer award programs, the JCPenney National Golden Rule Awards and the James Cash Penney Awards for Community Service. The ceremony was hosted by James E. Oesterreicher, JCPenney chairman and chief executive officer and Gale Duff-Bloom, President of Company Communications and Corporate Image. Sharing an inspirational message for the evening was actress Shelley Fabares, most recently known as television newscaster Christine Armstrong in Universal Television's hit comedy series Coach. "JCPenney has had a long-standing commitment to community involvement," said Oesterreicher. "Through these two programs, JCPenney takes the opportunity each year to illustrate its genuine concern for the communities in which it operates and to thank those who share that concern and show it through their actions," he added. Created in 1977, the James Cash Penney Awards for Community Service salute outstanding volunteers across the country who are active and retired JCPenney associates, as the company regards its employees. This year, three winners were selected from approximately 630 nominations in three categories--active associates, retired associates and associates who volunteer in the area of education. Each winner received a $10,000 contribution for his or her organization and a special crystal award. JCPenney Recognizes Outstanding Volunteers In 1982, JCPenney expanded its community service recognition program to include the Golden Rule Award program. This program was established to recognize individuals and organizations, from the community at large. This year, more than 20,000 volunteers were nominated for local Golden Rule Awards in more than 200 programs nationwide. Of those, nearly 1,000 received crystal awards and $1,000 contributions for their organizations. This year's national Golden Rule Award winners were chosen from the local winners. Each national winner in the adult, group and education categories received a specially commissioned crystal flame award and a $10,000 contribution for their organization. J. C.
