M O S T C E N S O R E D - - - - - - - - GARFIELD, N.J., Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- What comprises a coral reef system? Usually it is a combination of hard and soft corals, sponges, anemones, crabs, and other sea life. However, to the students at Roosevelt Elementary School in Garfield, N.J., it was 50 boxes of Kellogg's(R) Rice Krispies(R) cereal and 63 bags of marshmallows. The school participated in the second annual Kellogg's(R) Rice Krispies Treats(R) Recipe Sculpturing Contest for Schools and won the $10,000 grand prize plus a breakfast party hosted by the famous breakfast trio Snap!Crackle!Pop!(TM) for their sculpture of a "Coral Reef." The school's winning sculpture was a six-foot wide by three-foot high replica of a coral reef and its related ecosystem featuring an array of colorful coral, sponges, sea anemone and various species of fish, all created using the Kellogg's Rice Krispies Treats recipe. The coral reef won the national contest, edging out sculptures from 65 other schools in more than 30 states. "The Kellogg's Rice Krispies Treats Recipe Sculpturing Contest for Schools provides students with an enjoyable, educational experience because it involves a variety of subjects, including math, art and science," said Kenna Bridges, senior manager, communications, Kellogg Company. "We continue to receive a positive response from teachers and principals involved in the contest because it truly provides an opportunity for fun in education." "We're thrilled to have won the grand prize in this contest, but we were delighted just to participate," said Margarita Pennisi, Principal, Roosevelt Elementary School. "The students worked as a team in both coming up with the ideas and building the sculpture and they loved doing it ... now that's a lesson in education." Five judges, including representatives from Principal Magazine, the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), Food Creations, Inc. and Kellogg Company, reviewed essays and photos supplied by each school and based their judging on educational value (25 percent), creativity/theme (25 percent), development of structure (25 percent) and team approach (25 percent).
