M O S T C E N S O R E D - - - - - - - - UXBRIDGE, England, Sept. 20, 1999 -- The unmistakable turquoise of the Heinz Baked Beans can has been registered as a trademark to guard its status as Britain's best-loved food brand. The Trademarks Registry has taken the rare step of granting legal protection to a colour for a food brand. The Registry agrees that Heinz Baked Beans' turquoise has "achieved distinctiveness through use." Heinz Baked Beans' turquoise now joins BP green and Cadbury's purple as a registered trademark. "Heinz Baked Beans have been the nation's Number One for generations. They are such an important part of our culture that everybody recognises the turquoise can," says Mark Holdaway, Heinz General Manager. "The Trademarks Registry is quite right to grant this trademark to deter imitators." The vast majority of trademarks registered in the UK apply to words or logos and it is rare for a food company to be granted a trademark in relation to a colour alone. A favourite over the last century, Heinz Baked Beans look safe for at least another 100 years. Editor's Notes: -- The small white beans used to make Heinz Baked Beans are a type of haricot bean called "Navy" Beans. The other main ingredient is tomato puree, made from Mediterranean grown tomatoes. -- The secret blend of herbs and spices, which makes Heinz Baked Beans so popular, is known to only four people in the world. -- Heinz exports baked beans to 60 countries, including most recently Russia and China. -- At the beginning of this century baked beans were sold as a luxury food item that not everyone could afford. A large can sold for 9d, which would be the equivalent of 1.50 pounds today. -- A serving of baked beans on toast, accompanied by a glass of milk, offers over a third of the recommended daily amounts of iron, Vitamins B1 and B2, as well as three quarters the amount of calcium. -- The Bean Centre at the Heinz Kitt Green factory in Wigan uses 1,000 tonnes of dry beans per week. -- Heinz UK salesmen used to carry a hot flask full of baked beans to provide samples for their customers. Celebrities who are known to enjoy Heinz Baked Beans include Naomi Campbell, Albert Roux, Scott of the Antarctic, Mel C of the Spice Girls, Bill Beaumont, Cilla Black, Tony Banks MP, and England Cricketer Jack Russell.
