MAY 11

We are tardy in announcing some good things that involve our writers and magazine. Here are some of the items:

Judy Budnitz's story, Flush, which appeared in our third issue, was recently selected for inclusion in the upcoming O. Henry collection of the year's best short stories. Ms. Budnitz is the author of two acclaimed books, Flying Leap and If I Told You Once. We are extremely happy for her, and hope that she enjoys the prize money, a reported $10.5 million, albeit over twenty years.

In the same issue, Paul Maliszewski published something called Two Prayers, and that piece, which we published only out of pity, has been selected for inclusion in the next Pushcart Prize collection. We are very happy for the prolific and soft-spoken Mr. Maliszewski, whose work also appears in the fourth issue of McSweeney's.

We are also very happy to echo the loud chorus of congratulations for McSweeney's frequenter Jonathan Lethem, who of course was recently awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction, for his Motherless Brooklyn. Though he has not yet thanked us for giving him his start, we are sure Mr. Lethem will soon do so.

For news regarding the acquisition of the first three issues of McSweeney's, see here.
