Issue No. 15, or The Icelandic Issue.
- - - -
Issue 15, featuring stories by Steven Millhauser and Roddy Doyle and
11 of the most Icelandic writers writing today, is now available. The
issue also comes with a special pocket-sized issue of Sed Og Heyrt. For
those who have been living under a rock for the past decade, Sed Og Heyrt
is kind of an Icelandic version of People magazine. Except it includes a
picture of a guy wearing only a feather boa and a G-string contraption, with
the headline "Rokkorgia!," so maybe not exactly like People. Then again, it
does contain a small picture of John Stamos. I guess it's like we said in
the first place: "kind of."
Moving on: This issue turned out well, we think. Sweet cover art by
Leif Parsons. Clever horizontal cloth wrap. Very classy endpapers.
Stories featuring, among other things, Babar, Stalin, and dystopic
door-to-door salesmen.
And then the Icelandic authors! Here are their names: Sjon, Gyrdir
Eliasson, Bragi Olafsson, Einar Mar Gudmundsson, Hallgrimur Helgason,
Thorarinn Eldjarn, Gudbergur Begsson, Birna Anna Bjornsdottir, Oddny
Sturludottir, Silja Hauksdottir, Andri Snaer Magnason. (There are a bunch
of special characters we can't figure out how to do here, but they're
correct in the book, we're pretty sure.) To learn more about Iceland's
amazingly fertile literary community, read this.
