Look, I’m right there with you—the current version of the United States Supreme Court has made some pretty bad decisions recently. But here’s the thing: if you take a moment, step back, and look at the big picture, you’ll see that the rest of their decisions have also been bad.

I’m not saying it’s an objective fact that all the Supreme Court’s latest decisions have been total crap. I’m saying that some of their latest decisions have been total crap—and the rest of those decisions have also been total crap.

But let’s look toward the future, shall we? Even if the Supreme Court’s recent decisions have been absolute dog shit, if we look ahead we can see that—at the very least—all of their upcoming decisions will also probably be absolute dog shit.

So what do we do about it? Well, it seems clear that the current majority on the Supreme Court wields too much power. So a simple solution is that some of their power needs to be taken away. However, it’s important to note that the rest of their power also needs to be taken away.

One potential answer is to simply remove one of the previous president’s three justices from the court. But, once again, it’s important to note that if we removed one of those justices, we would need to stop there, take a breath, and then immediately remove the other two.

Perhaps, instead, we should expand the Supreme Court. This would give us means to partially dilute the power of the previous president’s judges. How would we do this? Well, we would add just a couple more justices. Just a couple! Then, once we’ve added those, we would add 330 million more.

Unfortunately, we’ll never be able to solve any of this if we don’t first get rid of the filibuster. Now, don’t get me wrong: the filibuster has sometimes been used to exert minority rule. But in all other cases, it has also been used to exert minority rule.

Listen, I don’t know the best route forward. All I know is that in some ways, the current Supreme Court is an abomination and a stain on America. But, and this is key: in all other ways, the current Supreme Court is also an abomination and a stain on America.
